Gameboy’s, Wii, Nintendo, Xbox.
Those are the typical activities you would imagine having to engage in with young children these days. What you might not expect to see are families out Nordic Walking together, let along RACING together! But, that is exactly what we saw at our latest British Nordic Walking Challenge race at Margam Park.
Out of the 100 competitors, we had 5 children enter, 2 of whom were under 10!
From the warm up, right through to the finish line, their enthusiasm and excitement was contagious and the absolute joy on their faces as they crossed the finish line to collect their hard earned medal was a highlight of the day for all of us who volunteered.
Lindsey Price, who raced with her 3 youngest grandchildren, Kayla aged 13, Calum 10 and little Ieuan only 7 years old had a fantastic day out at Margam and she told us that the children had been looking forward to the Challenge for some time.
Lindsey, like so many grandparents, looks after her grandchildren in the school holidays and took the kids along on one of her scheduled walks. Much to everyone’s amusement the children found sticks to use as makeshift Nordic Walking poles and as a result Lindsey treated them to their very own set of Exel Nordic Walking Poles.
Since then they have enjoyed many days out Nordic Walking together and Lindsey has even climbed Pen-Y-Fan with her little team! Kayla is so taken with her new hobby that she is using Nordic Walking as the focus of her PE course in school and has been busy collecting information on the many health benefits of walking with poles.
Lindsey encourages other families to take up Nordic Walking together, “I would highly recommend it for families as it provides an ideal opportunity, especially when one on one, to have lovely chats with children, in comparison to going on days out or visits to the park etc., when they are too busy playing.”
